On my trip to San Diego this weekend, I was finally able to try the Pierogi Truck. I spoke to the owner who told me they bring in all of their products from Polish delis and meat shops in Chicago. Seeing as he is from Chicago, this was no surprise. Chicago has the highest Polish population in the United States, so they are sure to carry good product and lots of options.

I'd like to start by saying, I swear they had a Polish babcia (grandmother) cooking away in the back of that truck somewhere. Yes, that's right, it was THAT GOOD!
I ordered the Polish plate, which was $15. This is the best way to go if you have never tried Polish food. You get a great preview of the type of food my culture offers and it's a great value. They even let me mix and match the flavor choices of my pierogi! I am a huge fan of options when it comes to food, I like trying new things and sampling many varieties. Pierogi are actually my favorite of Polish foods, you can read about my first attempt at making them here.

The golabki (stuffed cabbage) were really yummy. Golabki are typically ground or minced meat and rice or barley wrapped in cabbage. They are then baked in the oven smothered in a tomato sauce. The sauce can be thick or runny. I prefer a thick sauce, over a runny watery one, so this sauce was absolute perfection. This actually brought me back to my childhood memories of when my aunt made golabki with a thick sauce. Mmm, it was my favorite!
The Polish sausage was by far one of the best I have ever had. (This is a bold statement, considering I just spent time in Poland this past summer.) It was juicy and had just the right amount of spices. It was grilled to perfection and the onion and chive toppings were the perfect garnish. The sausage, toppings and bun were so well prepared, that I wasn't even disappointed that they didn't have mustard or ketchup to add to it.
As I stated above, pierogi are my all time favorite dish. The Polish plate comes with 3 pierogi and I chose potato & cheese (my favorite favorite), meat and mushroom. They were all wonderful. The fillings were all flavorful and the dough was wonderful. The added bacon and grilled onions is traditional and a nice way to add flavor. Finally, pierogi are typically served with sour cream. In my opinion, (most would strongly disagree) I don't find sour cream to add much to pierogi as far as flavor is concerned. So, I usually eat them with out it. However, in this case there was something unique about the sour cream. It seemed to have a ranch like flavor to it. They either mixed ranch and sour cream (genius!) or added some seasonings to regular sour cream for a nice kick. It gave the pierogi a gourmet like flavor.
I definitely recommend this truck to anyone in or near the San Diego area. You can find them on facebook and twitter to track their locations. I also obtained some great news from the owner for those of us living in LA. He is currently working with the Los Angeles Health Department to hopefully get a Pierogi truck here! After eating here, I can for sure say I am excited and would be thrilled to frequent the truck in my own town!!!

Bake, Glue and Trend!
That food truck sounds cool! We have a large Polish population where I live too and the supermarket I work at has a large Polish section, although I've never tried any of it, cabbage, veg and meat in glass jars just doesn't seem very appealing to me!
